Alberta Region nephrology nurses Kidney 100k March, Sept 10-12, 2010

Why We're Marching

We have had the privilege of working as Registered Nurses in
the Southern Alberta Renal Program for the past 14 years. We love what we do!

Renal failure is truly a life long challenge. Dialysis in any form or an organ transplant is a treatment and not a cure. Over the years we have watched the treatments change through a variety of research projects that provide valuable information leading to improvements in the quality of life and health for our patients.

We all know our most precious commodity is time. Conventional Hemodialysis - Imagine if you had to invest 4 hours 3 times a week attached to a dialysis machine, for the rest of your life. That is 12 hours a week dedicated to just staying alive. The reality is, that is just the beginning. Medical appointments, surgeries, procedures and transportation delays are just a few things that take away more time. Fluid restrictions, diet restrictions and medications are everyday life.

We have 90 such people at our dialysis unit alone. Many, many more have passed through our lives. Each one we lose is like losing a member of our family. Dialysis units are communities within themselves. These people are our heroes. It never ceases to amaze us the power of the human spirit. Each one of them has added to our lives and given us so many precious memories. By walking we feel we will be giving back.

"It is impossible to walk rapidly and be unhappy".........Mother Teresa

After 100KM we will let you know if this is true!!!!

We feel honored to walk for our patients and hope that you will support us to support them.

Our Dream...........Everyone will be able to do the PeePee Dance

Sincerely,
Heather Dean and Janice MacKay
