Interesting projects or initiatives (eg:  new program, research, new equipment).

We have been a very busy unit, just like all the others I'm sure!  We've recently started a new research study:  HepZero.  Nurses are involved and running the clinical part of things.  We expect to be done with this research in March 2012.

3. Staff/unit accomplishments you would like to recognize (eg. operational efficiencies, new techniques).

We recently had a few changes in administration. Chantal Saumure, our Nurse Manager, has been promoted to Program Director.  Congrats Chantal! And we are now getting aquainted with our new Nurse Manager Isabelle Fontaine.  Isabelle has previously worked in hemodialysis with us and we are please to welcome her back in our team.

4. Other information you would like to share with colleagues across Canada.

We would like to wish all the other Nephrology colleagues Happy Holidays and an amazing 2012!  Let's continue our team work

  • Motivational Interviewing has been a focus of attention in the Renal program through a Baxter-sponsored program called Pathway to Empowerment. It took place over the winter and spring of 2011. A follow-up session took place in October, for planning future steps to implement the principles of empowerment.
  • Renal Education Days were held in the fall, over four dates, and were well attended by staff from Satellite hemodialysis units, Home dialysis unit, Incentre hemodialysis units,  and Renal clinic. Topics included: Motivational Interviewing, Assessment of patients, Vascular Access: AVF assessment principles; Calciphylaxis, Obtaining Best Possible Medication History and Renal Jeopardy.
  • Fourteen staff attended CANNT in Calgary AB. In November, a  well-received follow-up session was held for staff, with the CANNT attendees giving a brief summary of a seminar they attended. Attendance at future conferences and membership to CANNT was also promoted.
  • The Inpatient Nephrology/Transplant unit has taken on 5 more general surgery/Heptatology beds with 10 nursing staff displaced due to the closure of another unit in the hospital. It has been a challenging time for the unit.
  • A Health Fair for Hemodialysis patients and families was held in November. Information booths, handouts as well as lunch and snacks were provided on a variety of topics: Foot care; Medication history; Transplant program; Home dialysis therapy options; Diet portion control; Transportation assistance options.
  • The annual Dialysis patient and family Christmas party was successfully held over two days in December with live music, gifts, prizes and lunch provided.
