Successful renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for most end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, improving quality of life and increasing survival as compared with long-term dialysis treatment. The purpose of this article is to explain the process of transplantation by discussing the assessment of potential recipients, surgical techniques, post-operative course, potential complications and benefits. A brief overview of immunosuppression will also be discussed.
